Session 4 Announcement

Ok, as the top vote getter in Session 3, maw is in the process of picking the theme for Session 4. I'll be posting it here, on the evening of Sunday, September 7th.

Start Date : September 8th, 2008
End Date : September 22nd, 2008

Theme : Use your foes.  Have your player ship interact with the enemy in a unique manner (other than shooting them).  This does not need to be a substitute for shooting (we've had that theme already) but should be critical to game play.  It could be some form of enemy manipulation, or some form of enemy assimilation (in whole or in part).

Some example games : Tumiki Fighters (attach parts of enemies), Trigger Heart Exelica (grab and throw enemies), Gaiares ("clone" enemy abilities), Einhander (attach enemy's dropped weapon)

We had great participation and a great set of entries for Session 3.  Let's keep the momentum going!

Re: Session 4 Announcement

Thanks guys, plan is to have one every 4 weeks, 2 weeks on, 2 off, so to speak.  I have to admit I'm enjoying this style of development a lot Smiley

Welcome to Shmup-Dev mordekai, hope you can participate in the next session.

Re: Session 4 Announcement

I'm certainly planning on it.  what tools do people use for the rapid prototype sessions?  GM?  write it out yourself?

Re: Session 4 Announcement

Hm, interesting theme. It feels like it'd be a bit of a labor, but it might turn out to be pretty interesting.

I'll hopefully be able to work up something to a playable degree this time. Even more hopefully in C++. I doubt that will happen, though.

You can definitely count on my participation for this one, to say the least.

Re: Session 4 Announcement

This one looks very cool!

It kinda sucks that I started work on my new game 3 days before the contest.

Good luck everyone! I'll probably sit this one out to finish my current project.

Re: Session 4 Announcement

Holy shit. This theme reminds me of the rpg game that I'm a big fan of. Megaten! Being a crazy megatenist, I'll think of something. And now that my internship is going to finish soon so I'm sure I'll have more time working on this. Cheesy

Re: Session 4 Announcement

one quick question about the rapid prototyping sessions:

is there still the requirement that they fulfill a "side-scrolling shooter" ?

No, not at all, any style of shmup is welcome.  Even so-called borderline games are welcome, the community will decide through voting whether something is too far out there.  "Still the requirement"?  Let me know where you got that impression so I can clarify Smiley

Re: Session 4 Announcement

a few years ago i remember this website did competitions for shooters.  not necessarily side scrolling, but certainly shooters.  I was asking if that general shump 'requirement' carried over into these rapid prototyping competitions.

I see, in that case "yes" to a general shmup requirement.
