Worstplayer's entry (done)

Ok, i managed to make VERY basic shmup using scraping to charge special attack. So far there's only one type of enemy (with no sprite) and nothing else.
Blitzmax is new to me so it goes slowly.

Re: Worstplayer's entry

Do the sparks coming off the player indicate a successful graze/scrape?

Here's a short video of what i have so far.

I know, it's not much, I have to rewrite some stuff before I can add more enemy types and spawn patterns(the game will be randomly generated).

Yeah.

Re: Worstplayer's entry

They really are. Are particle effects automatic in Blitzmax, or did you write the effects yourself?

Also does Blitzmax use OpenGL rendering?

Re: Worstplayer's entry

Nope, as far as I know there's no particle system in BM.
And I'm not sure yet if I'll use OpenGL or DirectX. Luckily, max2D works in both so I can switch them at any time.

Re: Worstplayer's entry

Sorry for lack of updates. I just spent two days trying to find bug that caused the game to randomly crash. Turned out the sound system created new channel for every sound and didn't bother tho remove it when the sound stopped playing. So after some time the number of active channels exceeded what BM can handle and it simply crashed. So much for garbage collection  Undecided
Anyway, it's fixed now.

This one blew me away and gets my vote!

Love the graphics of course.  Are those 3d models for the ships?  They look amazing.

The controls felt very smooth and I enjoyed playing it.  The particle effects looked good when they were far away, but got distracting when they were close up to the player ship.

Re: Worstplayer's entry (done)

Glad you liked it.

3D models: yes and no. Ships and some effects are pre-rendered 3D models, backgrounds are layered images of real space, and the rest is simple drawing.

As for distracting particles, yeah, that's a problem. In my next game, I'll make them gradually less visible if they get too close to the player.

Re: Worstplayer's entry (done)

That was some very intensive gameplay, I was instantly caught by the "just one more try"-syndrome. Grin

Too bad I couldn't use my gamepad with this. Pretty good variation in bullet patterns and a good concept. The smart bomb like effect and the multiplyer increase makes when increasing the gauge to max makes the game a lot of fun. Smiley
