Session 12 Announcement

Session 12 will start this Monday.
Start Date : May 11th, 2009
End Date : May 25th, 2009

Theme : Tentacles

berilium chose this sessions theme.  More of a game mechanic than we've had in a while, a good change I think.

Quote from: berilium
As for my choice for the next session's theme I've been thinking about "tentacles". Use them in a very creative way. They can be used for grabbing, motion, attack, etc. Use them in any side, player or enemy or else. It is up to every one.

Some classic games: X Multiply and Xexex.

This should provoke some interesting ideas I think.  Also, consider the definition of "tentacles" with regards to botany:

Quote
tentacle - a sensitive filament or process, as one of the glandular hairs of the sundew.

Ok, you've got roughly 2 weeks!

Cool Smiley  Very interesting theme this time.  Not sure it it'll scare people away or inspire them!

Re: Session 12 Announcement

I've been lazy lately. A certain game has devoured my time: Mabinogi. Something about RPGs and an anime art style are able to hook me for hundreds of hours endlessly.  Roll Eyes

Hopefully I'll be able to get myself to work the gears this Session, maybe using the sprites I made for the last one to save me some time. Unless there be objections, of course.

Re: Session 12 Announcement

Undecided if I'll give it another go. I should probably work on making some generic enemy mechanics and such anyways since all I have from last session's experience is targets that blow up. I'll decide once I see the theme I guess though.

Perfect that mechanic right there, and there's no need for any other.  Roll Eyes

I'm looking forward to participating =). I've looked around a bit and don't see a list of rules anywhere, so I guess it's pretty much free reign when it comes to libraries and such?

Pretty much use whatever you want.  These sessions are very informal regarding rules and such.  It's supposed to be about the ideas, which is usually the case Smiley

Is that meant to be a criticism of the prototype sessions?

Edit: Tentacles huh...? Sounds like a guaranteed programming challenge. Not sure if I'm interested.

Been reading the shmup-dev forums on for a while now, just never made an account.  I think I'm ready to actually make something playable.  Great mechanic/theme idea for this session.

I honestly haven't thought of anything particularly good that I think I could actually do...  Undecided

Haha, no. I'm saying eye candy can easily make a down-right boring game entertaining. For the most part.

Programming challenge? Well, unless you're trying to program actual tentacle(thinking octopus/squid) motion using primitives to display it.... Then maybe. But that's more of watching Animal Planet 5 hours a day than it is a programming challenge. Tongue
Sorry, just don't follow you on that one.

I was looking forward to make something, but honestly I have no idea for what to make this session.(as I'm sure others are having the same problem, since it's been about 2 days and not even a single topic has been posted.)

Well I wasn't referring to graphics actually. There are literally no enemies in my entry for last session, so I figure it would help if I had something to provide some kind of objective to the gameplay.

As for the tentacles, how then would you incorporate tentacles into gameplay without some tricky/involved coding? You could just make generic enemies that happen to have tentacles as part of their sprite, but who would waste their time making something like that for a prototype session? Tongue

Re: Session 12 Announcement

Hi!

Things seem cold over here. There is no entries so far and the first week almost ends. I would like to hear people's thoughts. If you think this is not an appropriated theme we might change it. I think the sessions are flexible enough to do so.

I apologies if the theme didn't fulfilled your expectations  Cry

Re: Session 12 Announcement

It's an interesting theme, though the best idea I've had so far is to just rip off the player ship from one of the examples and then make a bunch of tentacle-based enemies in an arena shooter.  Grin

Re: Session 12 Announcement

Well I think it's quite interesting as well, but likewise the best thing I could think of that wasn't merely a superficial use of tentacles was little tentacle mines that latch onto enemies that touch them and then blow them up. Not enough to base a game off of. =/

Re: Session 12 Announcement

I've been meaning to try out a tentacle with a hook thing... allowing a ship to grapnel and swing around.  But I haven't have time to even do a tech demo of that yet.

Re: Session 12 Announcement

Thanks for your honest answers guys!

I also want to say that you don't have to implement the flexible movement of tentacles. It can be rigid extensions that grow or expand from the spaceship, sort of. Be as much creative as you want.

Another interesting case of study is Irem's Dragon Breed. It's not a tentacle, but what I found interesting about is the way the dragon's body protects the core (in this case, the pilot). Some ideas can be borrowed from that game.

Following the idea and keeping a simple tentacle implementation. I was thinking about the spacecraft has two "tentacles" left and right. You use them as shields. So when you move backwards they tend to cover the front (imagine two hugging arms). And when it pushes forward they cover the rear part. This can be done by making each node of the tentacles follow a perimeter around the spaceship, so the two further left and right nodes will rotate faster than the inner ones. Also, the two further nodes will cover 180 degrees while the inner ones, progressively will cover a smaller range.

Now, I don't know if that would be a fun game haha Cheesy Just brainstorming.

Re: Session 12 Announcement

So basically like X Multiply, only the whole tentacle blocks shots?
Dragon breed looks very cool too. Smiley

Maybe it would be a good idea for us to have a group brainstorm sort of thing, despite the "competitive" nature of the sessions... Perhaps it would help jumpstart some inspiration and thereby more involvement.

My biggest problem is that I'm not very experienced with programming, even with game maker, so I'm not really sure how to go about making tentacles. I guess if I were to contribute some ideas though, I've been kinda thinking about how tentacles could grab or stick to things in different ways. Like I had briefly mentioned earlier, if their were mines floating in the air with little feeler tentacles hanging out that would grab hold of a player's (or enemy's) ship and drag them into the mine, that could be kind of interesting I guess. Otherwise they could be tentacles coming off from the player ship that you could control, either to whip-attack enemies ("saur-SAUR!") or to latch on to them. What you would do after grappling an enemy like that I'm not sure... You could chuck them at other enemies but thats getting a bit ambitious (and there's that other game doing that already... if it is ever finished).
Now I'm thinking about a bunch of tentacles latching on to the player ship, acting like bungie cords and limiting the ship movement... just weird really.  huh1

Re: Session 12 Announcement

Here's an idea: it could be like TUMIKI Fighters, only instead of enemies sticking to your ship, they could stick to a little ball attached to your ship via string, which could be swung around with momentum and simple rope physics. Grin

Re: Session 12 Announcement

I'm hoping to finish up some bits, and pieces of my ideas this weekend sometime.  I had a similar idea mentioned above, to use tentacles maybe as a shield, or in some kind "sweeper", to absorb, or deflect shots.  I was thinking maybe something like making the ends sticky, to grab enemies, and toss them around, or into each other with some kind of physics.  Maybe a couple other ideas.  I want to try, and get a little tech demo together that can change between a few different "tentacle mechanics".  Me likey cephalopods.

Anyone working on the doujin Hentai tentacle porn/rape shmup...Im sure one probably exists already someplace though.
