Angels of time. (COMPLETE)

This will be a horizontally scrolling shooter with a lot of RPG elements, and I am not talking about the leveling up part. I'm sure you've seen more than enough of that already.

Early in the game you will have three 'main' characters. At some point, you will have to choose one of them. Difficulty, Story and levels will be different for each character. Every path will shed a different light on the main event of the strory.
During the game you will meet new characters that will help you out. You can choose three per level, and if they are killed, they are gone forever. You will probably be able to control those characters too.

I agree, though don't get your hopes up too high.  There have usually been a lot of registrants, but completing a game takes its toll, and there are usually far less by the deadline.

Well whatever you are doing in your newest contest project, I welcome you into this Shmup-dev competition, jaj!!  Great to have you aboard!!!  grin2

No pressure on you so far, just take your time and create something fresh, innovative, imaginative, and FUN to play for all of us within your project.  And if you can do that and show it to us before the September 30th deadline, you will be OK!!!  Wink !

(One more thing: it is so VITALLY important that you name your contest project here at once, jaj, so do be sure of that!  grin1 )

Re: "Pure Evil" working title

Thank's everyone.

All the planning and forming an idea has been done, now it is time to actually start making the game. I'm pretty busy until august the first though.

Anyway, I posted a mockup and revealed some of my ideas above.

I like the music Smiley. The second one reminded me of the music in the shanghai alice games. I really need to learn to compose music.

Nice job.

Re: Still untitled

Thank you Smiley

The ending of black (and peace as well in my opinion) are this abrupt because the songs are supposed to loop. And black loops perfectly, but I still have to remove the last few seconds from that song.

I'm glad you all like the music, I'm rather proud of it myself. I just hope I can match the quality of the graphics with them...

I always like to start with the music. When I compose music I first decide the mood I want that part of the game to have, then I compose the song of that part. It makes it a lot easier to actually stick to a mood that way. (Since I can listen to the song and think "oh yeah")

Re: Angels of time

UPDATE
I have been on a vacation of three weeks, but now I'm back to show you some new stuff.

Firstly, I have been trying to make a theme for the actual shooting part of the game, I plan on three to five different tracks so you won't get bored. This means I will be re-using since I planned more than 5 levels.
For the music go here: http://www.jajproductions.nl/fight.mp3

Secondly I have been working on character design. I planned 4 controllable characters and 6 to 9 helpers (the options), three of them are done. One of them is the purple balloon you see in the screenshots.

And finally, I finally finished the design of one of the bosses. (The game will only have bosses.)
I hope you can figure out what he does a bit from the screenshots. He's a bit hard, so it won't be one of the first bosses.

Oh yeah, I changed the title again, expect that this will happen at least once more before the final version :p

Still working on this, so far I finished three short levels, each level with two bosses and a minimum of 6 different enemies. (though the enemies of each level can be similair)

Here are screenshots of the other two levels.

I hope I will be able to make two more levels, but time is running out so we'll see...

Finally I have a demo for you.

http://www.jajproductions.nl/AngelsOfTime.zip

I know it is "a bit" too difficult, but I don't have time to fix that at the moment...
I can work on this again next friday and the deadline is sunday, so I would appreciate some comments.

Move around with the arrow keys, shoot with z, use ally special with X, and switch between allies with C.

Good luck...

The icons that you pick up do remind me of Lords of Thunder a little bit, and I like that so much as well as the tightly well-done play control, too!!  Great job there on the whole game so far, as it is turning out to be such a fine entry indeed... no questions asked!!!  d=Wink=b

Re: Angels of time. A demo finally!

This game is beautiful to look at and really captures the spirit of the 90's console shmups. Will there be an option to play in windowed mode? I'm playing on a wide screen monitor and it kills your art with filtering. It feels like a tribute to a bygone era. The game play is good too a great pace to the movement. This just might be one of the top games right now. Grin

Re: Angels of time. A demo finally!

This is all very good to hear  Grin

I havn't got to the selections section yet. Unfortunatly I won't be able to work on this game during weekdays, so I have to be carefull with what I spend the rest of the time on. Different selections like changing window mode is pretty high in the list, also I still want to improve the difficulty level (probably add an easy mode and make this hard mode), and improve the city in the sky level (wich I don't like that much) a lot. There won't be any new levels for next week unfortunatly, I'll try to make a final boss, but I can't promise anything, since it's not at the top of my list right now.

Re: Angels of time. A demo finally!

No, not "not running" as in being unplayably slow; "not running" as in doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING when I click on the exe.  Vista does that with pretty much every Game Maker game that I've tried to run, so I'm sure that it's not a problem with my MONTH-AND-A-HALF-OLD graphics card.

Alright, since you know it's an issue with Vista and Game Maker games you can mention that.  Instead of being all terse like you were with a "Wouldn't run...".  Seems to be a growing problem, though, as others are using Vista and we need to educate the developers to create Vista builds (I think it sounded pretty easy).

Re: Angels of time. A demo finally!

Your game is very good.
I like the graphics (but fullscreen mode blurs them) and the music, especially in the clouds level.
The thunder clouds level is well designed but the other levels have some unfair situations like
this warping mid boss!

I have 3 suggestions:
-add respawn invulnerability, maybe 2 seconds
-convert your game to 60 fps and it looks much smoother
-reduce diagonal movement speed to 0.7*speed

The main problem with 60 FPS/hz is to make it stay at 60 FPS.

i don't think it will be that much of a problem to make it stay at 60.

but...

There already IS respawn invulnerability :S

Quote

It's not really that unfair, you need to stay in the middle and pay a bit of attention to what it is doing, but I might make him act this way only in hard mode or something...

Edit: Converting the game to 60 fps prooves to take too much time, I'm sorry.

Its a bit short but maybe ist ok.

Converting to 60 fps is much easier than you think.
Make a backup then double all cooldowns and half all speeds.
Its worth it.
