play basic


quite a cute basic, anyone tried it?

Not used it, but tbh I dont think your going to find any basic derived language to rival Blitz 3D, I would not say that Blitz Max is basic Derived, its gone to far for that now and in terms of speed can rival c.

I am aware of blitz, but I think Play Basic is interesting
Like blitz/darkbasic it is aimed for making games.
Also has built in commands for such things as vector graphics.
I cannot comment on its speed.

Play basic is  early in development and the authors are open to suggestions on the forums,
Also I think they are working on another more advanced version.

On a different subject it is a shame that blitz3d is based around old DX and does not take advantage of
shaders, on the plus size for the blitz family bitzmax is cross platform. Darkbasic pro on the other hand uses
more up to date DX but lackings in other areas? Last time I coded anything in basic I ended up using blitz3d,
not sure why I was drawn to it.

I myself am not looking for a language to code in, though I like to dabble.
I may well produce something very simple for fun with Play Basic, because it seems quite nice.

Yeah, I've had a look at PlayBASIC - its not bad. Not had a look at any of the recent updates and it was literally fresh on the market when I tried it, so hopefully the problems with the collision detection will be fixed by now.

The commandset is easy enough to get to grips with, not sure if it offers many advantages over using any other language aside from being cheap, but its certainly worth a look at.

I think Ian has had a deeper delve into it than myself, so he's probably better qualified to comment Smiley

Well, I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.

I've tested PlayBasic on several computers by downloading their demos. The frame rates vary dramatically, but on several graphic intensive demos the frame rates were slow on pc's ranging from 350mhz to 3ghz. So I'm not at all convinced this would be something to build a shareware game buisness on. But their newer PlayBasicFX which utilizes hardware rendering does look very promisiing.

Are you planning on going the shareware route with your games? If so I would recommend you stick to DX 8 at the highest, simply because currently Windows XP does not come with DX9, which means a lot of users won't have it. Sure you can point them to the download (which is a large one), but it's certainly going to put a lot of people off. Some of my earlier games used DX9, and I had a lot of DirectX related tech support issues. Since using 7 I've had very little in comparison.
