What do we think about the future rapid prototype

I wasn't here for any of rapid prototype, but from what I've seen it looks like
basically nobody made/finished an entry last time. Thence, there was no competition.

What's next? What do the members think should be next?
Should we reboot the same session? Should we start with a new one? Should the rules change?

We should get some discussion going about this, and exchange some idea's or opinions.

If we reboot/extend session 16, I will definitely try to pull something together.
If we start a new session I'll most likely be interested in entering.

The one thing that I wouldn't like would be for rapid prototype to die right before I
found it.

As for the rules, I think they're good. Two weeks is just the right amount of time to put together a simple game based on a particular concept.

I failed in the last installment, but if there's a new iteration I'll try my best to finish something.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

Yeah, it looks like nobody finished even though people tried out.

I think we should reboot/extend session sixteen.
That way not only will there be another session(picked by the winner),
but it will also give a chance for session sixteen to show the value of it's theme.
Plus it will help us shmup developers to be more open minded about what can be in a shmup.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

I suggest we reboot Session 16 (we can call it Session 16 1/2) and set the deadline to September 5th or 12th. We could start this week.

I've been inactive for too long and my fingers are itching to do something. Having a clear deadline would be good.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

September 12th sounds more probable unless session 16 is rebooted like today or really soon, which is probably unlikely.

If we get a few more people posting here who are interested in a reboot, I might ask the2bears about it.

Is that a reference to the thread of your unfinished entry?

I DO know what the electric boogaloo is.
However I am unable to compute the vastness of the gap between the genre of shmup,

Wikipedia to the rescue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakin%27_2:_Electric_Boogaloo

'Since the release of the film, the unusual subtitle "Electric Boogaloo," a reference to a funk-oriented dance style from the 1970s, has become a commonly used snowclone concerning sequels. The implications vary, but tend to imply a sequel that is ridiculous, absurd, unwanted, unnecessary, formulaic, or simply obscure.'

Electric boogaloo (sometimes mistakenly referred to as electric boogie) is a style of funk dance and hip hop dance closely related to popping.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

Extending session sixteen might lead to cheating and or mistrust due to the theme already being out.
It's probably best that we somehow pick a theme and move on to #17.

But, the question there is where would that theme come from?
Maybe I should whip up some game and submit it way past the deadline just to see what happens.

I AM motivated.  Cool

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

While that would initially seem to be much more constraining than past themes, it would let everyone focus on "the twist" instead of the overall concept.  (Sometimes you have an idea right at the beginning, and sometimes you don't get one until near the end--I've experienced both extremes in past sessions.)

I think we should stay away from themes related to plot line and stick with ones related to gameplay.
BTW, it might not be a good idea to publish theme idea's in this thread.  Wink
The theme wouldn't be a secret and therefore there would be no 2 week time limit.

I've got a few idea's conjuring up, but we still haven't decided who will/how the next theme will be picked. We need a solid decision.

Solution: Everyone think of something very open-ended and curious and fun and things and send it to lazerblade in a PM.

When he gets one he likes he can post an I GOT ONE I LIKED message.

And then we'll find a date, etc.

I'm really busy these days, but getting the itch again to code a game.  Haven't done anything since my last entry in... how many months ago?  Is it over a year?

Thinking that the 2 week format doesn't give enough time with my schedule.  Thoughts on a longer time frame?  Perhaps with the expectation that the games are a little (just a little) more polished?

Yea, I've had thoughts about session length as well.
I think increasing session length would be a good idea.
The only problem would be if it became longer than a month.
After all it is Rapid prototype.  Roll Eyes
After #17, we should decide how long the sessions will be.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

I had to experience it too ^^

To study and running two projects the same time is very time consuming.

I could think of 3-4 Weeks.  The standard for finished entries would increase automatic, i think. So we dont have to worry about setting new requirements or something...

Making it too long would make it too daunting though. Expectations would be higher and you'd have to dedicate more into each session. In my opinion, no more than 3 weeks would be best.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

I like experimentalgameplay.com's format, you're only allowed to spend 7 days total on your entry, but the theme runs for the whole month so it allows a flexible schedule.

I only dislike the month wait between themes, I really think it would be nice to give a two week window with the rule that you're limited to 7 days total, that way there is still flexibility for schedules and there isn't the thought of it being a race to crunch and polish the longest in order to have the best entry.

Keep in mind that these are Rapid Prototype Sessions... we really shouldn't need more than a total week of actual work, it shouldn't be about who can polish the longest.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

That's a cool idea but I foresee problems... How do you really limit yourself to only spending that much time on it? A deadline is a deadline and you either finish in time or you don't, simple, but with this on top of it you're really restricting your ability to be flexible according to your project's needs. There are always unforeseen issues and judging the amount of time it will take to implement your project's different components can be very difficult. I don't think that everyone here is confident enough in their programming and development skills to be able to work within that kind of self-imposed restriction with much success.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

I agree with moosa, that would increase the stress level which would in turn decrease the quality of the prototype.

I think two weeks is an optimal amount of time to spend, as it gives you enough time to create a solid prototype rather than something that feels rushed and incomplete. Now I'm definitely not saying that a prototype needs to be a complete game or anything close to it. Two weeks allows for a solid error margin and still keeps it from becoming a race of polish.

The main problem that we seem to see is scheduling. If you for example work every other week, then you would only get one week of work in for a two week session. But extending it to three or four weeks would give the others so much extra time it wouldn't be fair. One week is too short, three is almost too long, two weeks can cause scheduling problems. It comes down to picking the lesser of a few evils.

I like two weeks, could live with one or three though.

Re: What do we think about the future rapid prototype

Lets look at it this way. It's always been two weeks, laid back, nothing complicated. It's worked successfully in the past. I'm thinking the only thing we really need is more interest and excitement again. We can't ever expect everyone to be able to participate and successfully complete an entry for every session, but the more interest we can generate from more people, the more entries we'll receive and the more people will get excited about it and want to do what they can to participate in the future sessions. Its sort of a momentum thing. Traffic to this site is very low right now, so I think a lot of this discussion is spawning from the idea of trying to cater to the very few that float around here. Maybe we just need more people interested.
