FAQ

Q) Can I make a platform game like Metal Slug or Contra?
A) Yes, all 2D Game styles are allowed as long as your main character uses the required feature (autofire)

Q) Do we have to have scrolling, if so, where and when?
A) Scrolling is not required.

Q) How many levels do I need?  Does the game have to be complete?
A) All you need is a working demo of the game that includes at least one level.

Q) Do I need to have a BOSS in this one?
A) You donít need one, but if you do that is OKAY!

Q) Can I rip graphics from a commercial game?
A) All graphics must be ORIGINAL, please see the rules.  This site does not promote any illegal activity and ripping graphics is copy right infringement!

Q) What are the judges looking for in graphics or sound or gameplay?

A) Everything will be judged, including Technical, Game-play, sound, graphics, originality, and OVERALL.  All of these things will be based on the judgesí opinions and not yours, or your friends, mother, brother, or any other party not given the position as a judge.  Judges will also be judging games on how they FEEL about it overall, and that will determine who gets the prizes.

Q) Does it have to be 20 megs?
A) No 20 megs is the limit, if the DOWNLOAD itself is larger than 20 megs it will be disqualified.

Q) Is it 20 megs zipped or unzipped?
A) IT really depends on the DOWNLOAD.. If your download is 19 megs zipped and then the game itself is 40 megs unzipped you are OKAY.  It's all about the download size and nothing else.

Q) What programming language can I use?
A) Any programming language, SDK, engine, Game Editor, etc is allowed in this contest.  As long as the game works without needing to download 3rd party software that needs PURCHASED you are OK.  Please make sure that you tell the us what software we need to play your game (if we need a special driver, etc)

Q) Do I have to be in a team?
A) Nope!

Q) Can I be an artist on my friends game and do my own game?
A) Yes, you can.

Q) Can I have keyboard / mouse / gamepad control?
A) You can use all three if you want.  You WILL lose points if it is a gamepad / joystick ONLY game.  I would recommend keyboard OR mouse control WITH a gamepad option.  BUT just keyboard or JUST mouse is ok, it all matters how it works with your game really.

Q) What are the System Requirements?
A) To be announced, as long as the system can work on a middle of the line PC and is compatible with Windows 98 / 2000 / XP.  If additional drivers are needed to play, they must be included with the game or linkage used.

yes but the game must not be updated after the contest is over, so it would have to be a freeze-frame of it so to speak.

You've got the same issue with Flash games... I'd suggest figuring out how you might host the web-based games, otherwise you have to "prove" the date of the file.

Re: FAQ

Hi,

Just one question: Is it permissible to use designs from existing works - games, movies, whatever - if the assets are original?

For instance, if I made a vertical-scrolling game where the player flies the Vic Viper, would it be allowed, assuming that the the artist drew/painted the sprites from scratch and didn't rip them off from somewhere else?

- 5p.

All art is ok as long as you have permissions, so in your situation it looks like it would be fine!

Re: FAQ

Autofire is when you are automatically refiring your weapon.  Its like, all you have to do is hold the fire button and you're shooting!  It also can be where you don't hold any fire button down at all and you're always shooting.  I hope this helps!

Re: FAQ

I have 2 questions:
1. Are we allowed to enter games we started before the competition, or must it be a whole new game? I've made several attempts at making a shmup in the past and got bored of most of them, but this competition might give me enough motivation to finish one of my older attempts.
2. Are there any specific things that a platformer must have to make it considered a shmup? Are there certain elements I need to include, or does it just need to be action-oriented and involve shooting things?

EDIT: I figured I might as well ask another question since nobody's replied to this post yet. I also took out the music question because it was pretty stupid and I think I'll make my own music anyways.

Hi,

Does a burst of fire count as autofire? e.g. if you press fire once and the player fires for 3 seconds automatically, then stops.

I would pass that as autofire since you're shooting for a good 3 seconds. however I'd probably give it a lower score because I personally dont like this method, unless the game was so good that it compensated.   Roll Eyes  (besides, there are other judges anyway)

1. No, the game must be started anew, you can use previous engines created though.
2. shmup(shoot em up) - I would make sure you're shooting up the place if its a platformer.  Simply put, if its like contra you're good, if its like mario bros youre not so good.  Fire flower doesnt really count because you get it on some levels and the game focused more on obstacles and jumping than it did shooting things.  If its a shoot em up platformer you are shooting a lot of things like contra.

Re: FAQ

Thanks. I'd also have a power-up to activate a longer autofire, if that helps.

Re: FAQ

Hi, I am interested in this compo, just checking if my idea will get disqualified or not.

The question is, must the auto fire feature only applicable to the main weapons? Is it applicable if only the sub weapons got auto fire? Like those auto firing missiles (either normal missile or homing missiles) that shoot automatically when the player got a power up, does this qualify? How about auto firing option parts (think Gradius)?

regards.

Re: FAQ

I plan to have the super-bomb autofire when the player gets hit. I'll try to make it a main part of the gameplay. I hope this is okay.

Well, the main shot will probably be autofiring anyway, so... Cheesy

Re: FAQ

I suck at making music, and have found some really cool chiptunes, but when I tried to contact the guy who made them, it turns out that his e-mail adress no longer exists (the songs were uploaded way back in 1999). I really, really want to use these songs, and will give proper credit (as well as share any possible winnings with the guy and ask for permission if I ever get in touch with him). Would it be okay to use the songs, or would it be against the rules?

Re: FAQ

Did you find them on modarchive.com?
If so, you might want to ask around on the forum, maybe someone is in contact with that artist.

Re: FAQ

Actually, one of the songs I'm going to use was found there. But I didn't even know they had a forum. I found most of the stuff on chiptunes.org, though. Thanks for the tip, I'll see if I can find someone who can help me on the modarchive forum.
